Russia-China veto of US proposal on Gaza ceasefire
Russia, China and Algeria have vetoed the resolution raised by the United States in the United Nations Security Council for an immediate ceasefire in the besieged Gaza Strip. The countries vetoed the Security Council vote on Friday (March 22). However, 11 countries voted in favour of the cease-fire. And Guyana abstained from voting.
Russian Ambassador to the United Nations Vasiliy Nebanza spoke about this after the veto. He said this proposal is a hypocrisy of the US. Whereas the US did nothing to stop Israel in the first place in Gaza. There they speak of a cease-fire at a time when “Gaza has practically been wiped off the face of the earth. We have seen here an old show of hypocrisy.”
On the other hand, the United States complained that Russia and China vetoed their proposal for political reasons. Because they want the defeat of the United States anyway. In this regard, US Ambassador Linda-Thomas Greenfield said, “Russia and China did not vote for the resolution because they want the US to lose anyway. Once again Russia has brought politics ahead of progress."
The resolution proposed by the United States called for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza. That would end the war and free all Israeli hostages. At the same time, huge life-saving relief will reach Gaza.
This resolution was preceded by three other resolutions on a cease-fire in Gaza. But the United States vetoed all those proposals. Those proposals also called for an immediate ceasefire. But at that time the Americans vetoed it in favor of Israel. At that time, they said, if a ceasefire is implemented in Gaza now, it will benefit Hamas and the hostages will not be released.
Guyana was the only country to abstain from voting on the US-backed resolution, saying it condemned Hamas. But not once is Israel mentioned. So who is being offered a truce? In addition, the country's ambassador, Caroline Rodriguez, asked who is preventing aid from reaching Gaza. Who is not stopping the attacks on Gaza? They know the answers to these questions. Yet why was no claim made to the occupying Israel?
